As bird owners, we always want to make sure that our parrots live long, happy and healthy lives. That's why it's so important that we understand the common signs and symptoms of illness. When pet-owners recognize when it's time to go to the vet, they can help protect their parrot. Here are a few common signs and symptoms to look out for.
Signs Your Parrot is Sick:
They Have Ruffled Feathers - Does your parrot sit with their feathers fluffed out? While this may look cute, sitting with their feathers fluffed for long periods of time (more than a day or so), it's important that you reach out to your vet.
Their Droppings Are Unusual - While your bird's droppings will vary depending on what you feed him or her, droppings that are yellow, rusty, brown or tarry black can be a sign of illness.
They Have a Reduced Appetite - Birds are known for having high metabolisms, so it's important that they receive enough nutrition every day. If you notice that your parrot stops eating and starts to lose weight, this could be a sign that he or she is in need of medical attention.
Weight Loss - Many parrots ruffle their feathers when they aren't feeling well, concealing weight loss. Keep an eye out for any changes in body mass.
