What Can My Hamster Eat?

One of the most popular small pets that anyone could own is a hamster! These cuddly, cute little creatures are an absolute joy to have in your life and will make for a wonderful pet! If you’re a first-time hamster owner, then you might be doing your “homework,” wondering what these critters can eat daily. If you’re not sure what to feed them exactly, here are some things to keep in mind:

Hamster Pellets

Of course, the first and most common meal to provide to your hamster are pellets. Typically found at an array of pet stores and grocery stores, this is the perfect menu items to give to your little critter. One thing to keep in mind is that many bags of pellets are dyed to be bright and vibrant.

While the mix might seem like a cute, fun idea to feed to your little buddy, it’s something that you’ll want to avoid. The reason being is that those dyes used aren’t typically the best for your hamster’s health over time. To keep your buddy in good spirits, you’ll want to feed them pellet mixes that aren’t dyed vibrant, unnatural colors.

Fruits + Vegetables

If you’re looking to change things up, don’t hesitate to feed your little buddy some nutritious fruits and vegetables! But before you start pulling things off the shelf and preparing them, here are a few of the many that you can feed them:

  • Peaches

  • Broccoli

  • Cucumbers

  • Apples

Always keep in mind that you’ll want these treats under water, first, but you’ll also want to cut them up — and the amount should never be too much; keep it as small as a raisin. By doing so, you’ll keep your little buddy safe and out of harm’s way.
