It’s officially fall — and for many of us, that means it's finally acceptable to indulge in pumpkin everything. And while you may be sipping on a pumpkin spice latte while eating pumpkin pie, don’t forget that your parrot can join in on the fall fun, too! There are plenty of festive and healthy pumpkin treats that you can give your parrot!
Fresh Pumpkin Seeds
If you plan on finding the perfect pumpkin to carve into a jack-o-lantern this fall, save those pumpkin seeds for your parro Remove the seeds, wash and remove the pulp, and pat dry. You can then bake the seeds at 375 degrees for 40-45 minutes. Just make sure that they are cool before serving them to your parrot — and remember, DON’T add salt!
Baked Pumpkin Bread
If you love to bake, try throwing together a healthier pumpkin bread for your parrot. Just keep in mind that as with all treats, you don’t want to overfeed your parrot! You also want to make sure that any pumpkin puree used is completely unseasoned. Salt and other seasonings are unhealthy for your parrot. Find the recipe here.
Steamed Pumpkin Cubes
Cut your pumpkin into cubes and boil it for about 20-30 minutes, or until it’s semi-soft. Make sure that the pumpkin is cooled before feeding it to your parrot.
Purchase a Treat
There are plenty of pumpkin parrot treats on the market. Do some shopping for a treat that is healthy and festive for your feathered friend.
As always, be careful with what you feed your parrot. Everything should be served in moderation — and if you have any questions at all about what your parrot can or cannot eat, you can give us a call or reach out to your veterinarian.
