Tropical fish tanks are a beautiful addition to any home, but they do require regular maintenance to stay clean. In addition to regular water changes, pH adjustments, and filter changes, you’ll want to make sure that your aquarium decorations are clean, too. We recommend that you clean your tropical fish tank decorations about once a month — or when you start to see that excessive algae is building on them. Below, we’ve listed a few tips to help you keep your tropical fish tank decorations clean.
How to Clean Your Fish Tank Decorations:
Remove A Few Decorations from the Tank - First and foremost, you will need to remove the decorations from your tank. Since your decorations help keep healthy bacteria in your tank, you don’t want to remove and clean them all at once. Just remove a few! Remember to wash your hands (and remove all soap) before reaching into your fish tank.
Boil Some Water On the Stove - Bring a pot of water to a boil on your stove. After it has started to boil, place one or two decorations into the pot and let them soak for about 20 minutes. This should help kill most of the algae and make the decorations easier to clean.
Scrub the Decorations Down - After boiling, you can remove the decorations and scrub them with a toothbrush. Make sure that this is a toothbrush that is strictly dedicated to your aquarium (don’t use your regular toothbrush)! The algae should scrub off easily.
