With Earth Day right around the corner, many homeowners are looking for ways to make their lives a little bit more eco-friendly. While you might be looking to reduce, reuse and recycle — why not try to “green” your tropical aquarium, too! Here are a few tips to help make your fish tank a little bit more eco-friendly.
Eco-Friendly Aquarium Tips:
Re-Use Your Aquarium Water - Recycle your aquarium water! The water that you take out of your tank during weekly cleanings is packed with nutrients. Add that water to your house plants instead of tossing it down the sink drain. This is a great way to fertilize plants around your house, while reusing some of your aquarium water.
Add Live Plants - Skip the plastic plants and go for the real thing! Live plants naturally filter out waste so that you can keep your tank cleaner, naturally!
Put Your Lights on a Timer - Put your aquarium lights on a timer so that they are not on for extended periods of time (leading to more algae growth). Instead, you can put your lights on a timer, saving energy and keeping your tank clean.
Add Some Algae Eaters - For when your tank does build up some algae, have an algae eater in your tank! These fish thrive on algae and will clean up any algae that grows in your tank.
