Why Does My Bird Pace Back and Forth?

Have you seen your bird pacing back and forth in the cage?  Our birds can exhibit some strange behaviors, but there are a few reasons why your pet might be pacing.

  • Excitement - Pacing back and forth could be a way for your pet to show how excited he or she is that you're around! Your bird may pace back and forth on his perch or even climb around on the bars of the cage to get your attention.
  • Boredom - Your bird will get bored sitting inside of their cage all day. Make sure that your pet spends time stretching his wings and that he has plenty of toys to keep him entertained.
  • Health Issues -  Pacing back and forth in the cage can be a sign that your pet is sick. Check for other symptoms like loss of appetite, feather plucking, or unusual thirst. If you are unsure about your bird's behavior, be sure to consult your veterinarian.
