Summer is finally here! Now is the perfect time to snack on sweet fruits -- and your pets can, too!

It is important to provide your parakeet with a variety of food choices. While your parakeet loves to eat seeds, switching up their diet by mixing in healthy fruits and vegetables can help them live a longer and healthier life.  Here are a few fruits you can share with your parakeet this summer.

Summer Fruits for Parakeets:

  • Apples
  • Pears
  • Melon
  • Kiwi
  • Berries
  • Grapes
  • Oranges

These fruits provide your feathered friend with a nutritional source of essential vitamins -- Vitamin A, C and K.  They are the perfect treat on a hot summer day. They also provide your parakeet with minerals like potassium and manganese.  Fruits can help keep your birds healthy all summer long. However, don't forget to remove uneaten fruit after two hours.  Fresh fruits left in the cage can grow harmful bacteria if left to decay.

Other foods you can feed your parakeet include certain green leafy vegetables, like lettuce and spinach, as well as cuttle bones that provide your parakeet with calcium.
