African Cichlids are one of the most popular fish tank species to keep at home. They're beautiful, colorful and a great choice for beginner fish keepers. These tips will help make sure that your new fish lives a happy and healthy life in your new aquarium.
What Are Their Tank Requirements?
Larger tanks are always preferred, but not everyone can fit a big tank in their space. It is recommended that you have at least a 29 gallon tank for your new fish. Add a few rocks and ornaments to your tank so that they have enough space to feel at home, while still allowing enough space to swim and grow. While African Cichlids are hardy fish, you should have heater that maintains a temperature between 75 and 80 degrees.
Can You Add Other Fish To Your Tank?
African Cichlids can be a very aggressive fish species. If you are keeping multiple fish, make sure that you keep your cichlid in a tank with other fish their size. Most cichlids are very territorial and will eat small fish. However, the more cichlids you have, the less aggressive your fish will be.
What Do They Eat?
Your new African Cichlid likes a mixture of vegetation and fish. In addition to daily flake food, you can provide them with frozen blood worms and brine shrimp. Just allow the food to thaw before feeding. You can feed them two times a day. If you notice that there is leftover food in the tank, decrease the amount that you give them at the next feeding.
