Ich (ick), is the most common disease seen in freshwater and marine aquarium fish. Characterized by small white spots on the body and fins, this disease is a common annoyance for aquarists. If you notice these spots on your fish, it's important that you act quickly when treating your tank. These tips will help you effectively manage Ich.
How to Manage Ich:
Raise the Tank Temperature - The life cycle of Ich is very temperature dependent. Raise your tank (slowly) to somewhere between 78 and 80 degrees F. This will speed the cycle and allow you to treat the Ich more quickly and efficiently.
Check Your Water Quality - When your fish has Ich, it's usually due to poor water quality. Check to make sure that your ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH are all within the correct range for your tropical fish species.
Treat the Tank - After you adjust the water temperature and parameters, it's time to treat the tank with the correct medication. Depending on whether you have a marine or freshwater tank, we can help you determine which Ich treatment will work best for your tank.
