How to Treat My Fish Tank for Ich

Do your tropical fish have tiny white dots on their fins, tail and/or body? Ich, also known as white spot disease, is one of the most common tropical fish diseases. In fact, almost every aquarist deals with this disease at some point.

How to Treat Ich:

  1. Raise the Tank Temperature - Slowly increase the temperature of your tank water to 86 degrees F. You want to do this slowly in order to not shock your tank. Increase the temperature by just two degrees F per hour until it reaches the correct temperature.

  2. Make Sure There is Enough Oxygen - Ich decreases your fish’s ability to absorb oxygen. Make sure that your tank is well aerated by either adding more air stones or lowering the level of your fish tank water so that the filtered water creates more oxygen when it hits the surface.

  3. Add Aquarium Salt - Add aquarium salt to your tank for ten days. The salt will help boost your fish’s natural slime coats to protect it from the parasites.

  4. Perform Water Changes - Do 25% daily partial water changes! This will help remove the ich from the tank and also add oxygen to the water.

  5. Use Medicine - Pick up ich medicine from our store. Follow the instructions labelled on the medication for your tank. Always remove the carbon from your filter before treating your tank!
