We love to snack on fall treats, but did you know that your birds can too? Fresh fruits and vegetables are a great source of vitamins and minerals that help keep you bird happy and healthy. Here are are a few fruits and vegetables you’ll want to include in your pet’s diet this fall.
- Apples (Cored)
Be sure to keep fruit seeds like apple seeds out of your bird’s reach. Apple seeds contain cyanide. Remove the seeds before giving apples, pears or other seeded fruits to your pets.
- Cooked Sweet Potatoes
- Pumpkin (cubes and seeds)
Unlike with fruit seeds, parrots love to snack on pumpkin seeds! Just be careful to avoid salting your pumpkin seeds when you bake them. While salt is fine for human consumption, parrots and other birds cannot excrete salt the way that we do - making it a health hazard. Opt for unsalted pumpkin seeds without any additional flavorings.
Of course, it’s important to remember that not all fruits and vegetables are safe for your feathered friends. Avocados, mushrooms, onions and other toxic foods should be avoided. Be cautious when feeding your pet fresh foods that they are not used to.
