Labor Day weekend is almost here — are you ready for the three day weekend? This unofficial end of summer holiday is a popular time for backyard BBQs and one last chance to spend time in the pool before the autumn weather settles in. If you plan on having friends and family over to celebrate, don’t forget about your pets! Here are a few tips to help make your Labor Day weekend celebration parrot-friendly.

Labor Day Weekend Tips for Parrot Owners:

  • Keep Pets Away from the Grill - If you plan on having a backyard BBQ, make sure that you keep your pets away from the grill — and away from matches and lighter fluid. You don’t want a curious pet to inject something that it shouldn’t. You should also make sure that smoke isn’t coming into your home through an open window near the grill.

  • Keep Your Pet Hydrated - Although fall is right around the corner, it can still be hot in September. Make sure that your pets are provided with plenty of clean, cool drinking water.

  • Keep Window Screens Secure - If you plan on opening up your windows to let some fresh air in, make sure that you have secure screens. You should have extra supervision if there s a possibility that your bird is near a window screen.

  • Keep Door Closed - Just like with your windows, you’ll want to make sure that guests keep the doors closed during your Labor Day weekend celebration. An open door is an opportunity for your bird to get lost in the chaos.
