Pet Spotlight: Canaries

Thinking of adding a new feathered friend to your home?  We have beautiful canaries in stock that might be the perfect addition to your family.  These tips will help you keep your new canary happy and healthy.

Canaries are small songbirds that are known for their bright colors.  With the right care, these social birds can live 10-15 years -- and have been known to live for up to 20!

What should you feed your canary?

Your canary needs water regularly. Make sure there is a large water dish with water refilled.  You should also give your canary pellets instead of seeds.  These pellets are designed to include more of the nutrients (protein and vitamins) that your bird needs.    Canary seeds are also a good choice for your canary, as well was fruit and vegetables.  Apples, apricots, asparagus, bananas, and blueberries are all good choices for your pet.

If your canary only eats canary seed, you'll need to add some extra protein to his diet.  Feed your canary a protein supplment like an egg boiled for 15-20 minutes.

What kind of cage does your canary need?

Your Canary needs a wide cage so that it has plenty of room to fly from side to side.  Your cage should be about 16 inches tall and 30 inches wide (though of course, the bigger the cage the better!).  Be sure to place your cage in an area that has plenty of light and good ventilation for your pet.

How can you keep your canary entertained?

Toys and swings can help keep your canary busy and entertained.  While this bird species is less inclined to play with toys than other birds, giving them one toy will help keep them busy without the clutter.
