Guinea Pig FAQs

Guinea pigs can be the perfect pet for adults or children of any age.  Here are a few of the most common questions we get regarding guinea pig care.

Guinea Pig FAQs:

What type of cage should I buy?

Guinea pigs like to have space to roam.  The minimum cage size is 7.5 square feet.  However, they prefer a 10.5 square foot cage.  This will give your new guinea pig plenty of space to live a happy and healthy life.  Before you decide if a guinea pig is the right choice for your home, make sure that you have the space to hold your new pet.

What type of bedding do they need?

You should give your guinea pig paper bedding or kiln-dried pine covered by a layer of paper bedding.  Never give your pet cedar chips.  If you’re not sure what type of bedding is right for your pet, visit our store!

What should you feed your guinea pig?

Guinea pigs love hay!  If you have a young guinea pig (younger than 4 months) you should also feed them alfalfa.  You should also add pellets fortified with vitamin C and fresh food to their diet.  Fresh foods can include romaine lettuce, red chard, kale, dandelion greens and even fruits like cherry tomatoes and cantaloupe.
