How to Celebrate A Pet-Friendly Valentine's Day

Are you ready to celebrate Valentine's Day with your loved ones this weekend?

As you start to get your weekend plans in order, don't forget that your pets might appreciate some extra love this Valentine's Day, too!  If you plan on celebrating with your feathered friend, here are a few tips to help you celebrate a bird-friendly holiday.

Do..

Get crafty with DIY treats - If you're in the DIY mood, try making a special Valentine's Day treat for your feathered friend.  Try making your very own heart-shaped bird feeder like this one.

Buy a new toy - Offer your parrot a new toy to play with.  This will help keep them entertained and will add a new element of fun to their cage.

Offer “human” food to your pet - Certain fruits and vegetables are a perfect addition to your pet’s diet. Just be careful to make sure that you choose fruits and veggies that are safe for your bird.  If you’re not sure, visit our store and buy a treat specially made for parrots.

Don't...

Spray perfume near your pet - As you get ready for your Valentine's Day date, be sure to keep perfumes and colognes away from your pet.  Birds are sensitive to the fragrant oils in perfume.

Leave lit candles unattended - Candles are a great way to set a romantic mood, but they can have adverse effects on your pet birds.  Certain essential oils and chemicals that are added to scented candles are toxic to parrots.  You should also be careful to keep your bird in it's cage so that they don't accidentally knock into the flame.

Keep chocolate in a safe place - Valentine's Day wouldn't be complete without a box of chocolate.  Be sure to keep chocolate away from your birds, though.  Chocolate contains theobromine which is toxic to your pet.  Offer one of the DIY treats above, instead!
